Accessing Scotland's Past Project

To the north of Spottiswoode House, there lies a range of buildings containing stables, coach houses and a groom's house. They are arranged in a U-plan, with the two-storeyed groom's house at the centre.

The groom's house is a symmetrical, three-bay building. There are Classical touches evident, with a pedimented door and an arched, Venetian window above it on the first floor. Flanking the groom's house are matching single-storeyed coach houses, of similar general style to the main block and decorated with engaged columns. Two stable wings project south from the coach houses. These are not harled like the rest of the building, but unity is maintained by the continued use of pediments above doors, and the same window surrounds

The building dates from c.1777, although alterations were carried out throughout its history. An interesting feature is that in at least two of the boarded-up circular windows, the wood used to block the windows has been painted with an intricate design that copies a gothic style of glazing.
