To the north-east of Mertoun House are the stables which housed the riding- and carriage-horses that were once so vital for both transport and hunting pursuits. This building may date from about 1843, when the mansion house was first extended.
Laid out in a semi-circular plan around a central courtyard, the stables-block is two storeys in height: the ground floor stabled the horses and the carriages, while the first floor provided accommodation for the grooms and storage facilities for feedstuffs and bedding. A hoist, in the centre of the range, enabled feed sacks to be lifted up and down from the loft.
At each end of the block, there are adjoining two-storeyed blocks of cottages for estate workers.
