(NT 5896 3217) Stone Coffin found AD 1825 (NAT)

OS 6" map (1967)

A stone coffin was found at the NE corner of the farmhouse of Dryburgh Mains in April 1825. The internal dimensions were 6 ft 3 ins long by 2 ft 6 ins broad at the shoulders, and it contained a stone pillow with a groove for the reception of the head. Within the coffin was a skull, two leg bones, and one rib, the remainder of the skelton having crumbled to dust. The coffin was placed immediately opposite Sir Walter Scotts burial place at Dryburgh Abbey, and the human remains reburied in the churchyard. Many pieces of coffins have previously been found on this spot.

Erskine 1826-30

This coffin was inspected, and appears to be of medieval type. Local enquiries revealed no further information.
