(NT 4401 1207) Earthwork (NR)

OS 25" map (1967)

Earthwork, Whitcastle Sike: An oval knoll of rock lies in the course of an unnamed tributary of the Newmill Burn at a distance of 185 yds S of the summit of Whitcastle Hill, the stream running closely round its W side. The knoll has been banked round to form a raised enclosure, 105 ft E-W by 90 ft transversely resembling The Clints (NT41SW 15). The low bank is fragmentary with no definite entrance, and an external ditch can be seen on the SE.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 1948

This earthwork is generally as described by the RCAHMS. Only at the NE angle is there evidence of a bank, the remainder of thefeature being enclosed by a scarp 1.4 m high on the NW side and 0.4 m high on the SE.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (EGC) 4 March 1965

No change to the previous field report. This earthwork is probably a settlement.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (JB) 20 December 1979.
