Archaeology Notes

NT40SW 3 c.404 049.

NT 404 049 GUARD was commissioned to undertake an archaeological evaluation of the area in the glebelands of the manse at Teviothead. The area lies direcdy in the route of the proposed upgrading of the A7 Edinburgh to Carlisle road. Following recommendations in the desk-based survey, a programme of geophysical survey was undertaken in the fields to the E of the manse. The results obtained by electrical resistivity appear to suggest a sub-circular enclosure, possibly containing one or more structures. There is the possibility of a structure in the more northerly field. Further investigation of these anomalies is required, and work is ongoing.

NT 404 049 Further investigation by GUARD, in the form of trial trenching, took place at the site of a possible chapel at Teviothead (James 1994). Previous work, comprising a desk-based study and geophysical survey, had identified three areas which were deemed to be of potential archaeological significance. All three were investigated by trial trenches; no remains of archaeological significance were encountered.

Activities

Field Visit (1993)

An archaeological assessment undertaken by GUARD of the proposed upgrading of the A7 between Dovecot Bridge and Castleweary around the village of Teviothead identified a number of archaeological sites.

Enclosure embankments along the eastern side of the Glebe lands at NT 405 051.

The current church site at NT 403 051 has three previous forebears, one inside the churchyard at NT 403 051 (NT40NW 8) and one at NT 403 054 (NT40NW 9). The third is supposed by tradition to lie within the Glebe lands at NT 404 049, however no surface remains are evident.

Sbc Note

1995: trial trenching by GUARD turned up no evidence to support the claim that this site was ever a chapel.
