Archaeology Notes

NT39NW 27 3450 9726

In the south facing section of the cutting for a track leading from the A955 to the beach outside Jonathan's Cave, two walls have been sectioned as the cutting face has eroded back. The west wall is approximately 5m from the east wall. Both lie 0.8m below the present ground surface, and are made up of red sandstone blocks and flags. No mortar was evident. Both walls are approximately 0.7m wide and 0.5m high. The base of the walls was about 5m above the level of the track. Although probably post-medieval, these walls may be associated with Macduff's Castle (NT39NW 4) 100-150m to the west.

Information from Andrew Long, 25 Royal Terrace, Edinburgh, EH7 5AH (20 March 1989).
