Probably built as the orginal DRF post (Direction, Range Finding post) for the 9.2-inch gun of 'B' group which lies immediately to the south. The post is shown on a plan of the water supplies on the the island in 1913 (The National Archives WO 78/5161) annotated as 'former DRF B Group'. A new post for 'B' group lies to the N (see NT28SE 5.44).
