Architecture Notes

NT28SE 5.29 centred 29208 82930

Area of large huts and concrete hut bases situated at a lower level NW of the Lighthouse (NT28SE 6.00).

A group of three huts at NT 29208 82930 all of similar construction and flat roofed. All have the appearance of pre-fabricated panels over metal framing. Other buildings are built of brick with concrete roofs, two are large (NT 29243 82964 and NT 29256 82987), with the former, with a wooden roof frame in an advanced state of collapse and the latter with a corrugated asbestos roof.

At c. NT 2922 8288 is a small corrugated iron hut with four window openings, which contains the remains of a small diesel engine. In the surrounding area are several concrete hut bases reflecting the removal of huts over the last forty years.

The hutted camp and buildings are visible on oblique aerial photographs taken in 1963 (Aerofilms 1963), which show the almost complete layout of the northern end of the Island.
