World War One Audit of Surviving Remains (6 November 2013)

One of nine known blockhouses (what would be known in the Second World War as 'pillboxes') built in the First World War, to defend the fortress of Inchkeith. This example lies to the south of the southernmost battery.

Information from HS/RCAHMS World War One Audit Project (GJB) 6 November 2013.

Architecture Notes

NT28SE 5.17 29577 82219

Brick and concrete defensive blockhouse situated on the SW tip of the island. Gun loopholes set at higher level than pillbox. The structure is seven sided and measures about 6m by 4m overall. The entrance is in the rear NW elevation.

Between this blockhouse and Blockhouse No.4 (NT28SE 5.18) and nearer the shore is an area of sawn off angle irons set in concrete, possibly the remains of the 'Wire Entanglement' noted on the Ordnance Survey pre 1st World War plan of the Island.
