After the coronation of Charles I at Holyrood Abbey, following its reconstitution as the Chapel Royal, and together with the rising importance of the Palace, the parishioners came to be ousted from the church, and when a new parish church came to be erected in the Canongate the Abbey Church became officially what it had long been in practice, the Chapel Royal.

However when a new roof was added in 1768 the structure collapsed and has since remained in ruins.

The Nave of the Abbey Church (Midlothian 3NE 35.1) was reconstituted as the Chapel Royal for use of the most Noble Order of the Thistle in 1672. (J S Richardson 1936).
