Archaeology Notes

NT27NE 8152 c. 267 774

N55 59 W3 10.5

NLO: Port of Leith [name: NT 265 775].

Not to be confused with NC01NE 8001 or NT58NE 8039.

Leith, 18th Aug. The GARIBALDI (st. tug), of this place, Balfour, sunk, 14th Aug., at the entrance of the harbour, after collision, with the LORD ABERDOUR (s), which proceeded: crew saved.

Source: LL, No. 16,958, London, Thursday, August 20 1868.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 11476).

A location at NT c. 267 774 may be suggested for this loss. The present locked entrance and control tower (NT27NE 57.03, at NT 264 779) date from the rebuilding of the 1960's.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), presumably suggesting her successful recovery.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 19 August 2005.
