Present condition: broken at the top and the foot, worn.
Description
This fragment is carved in relief on three faces. Within a plain flatband border, face A bears the plain shaft of a cross, with interlace flanking its left-hand side and a simple twist of two strands with a median line on the right side. Below the foot of the cross is a panel containing an eight-strand plait. Narrow faces B and D are carved with square key pattern, and face C is unornamented.
Date: ninth century.

Part of a free-standing cross, sculptured in relief on its front and sides, which was found built into a wall adjoining Liberton Tower (NT 265 696: NT26NE 7) was donated to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1863. It measures 2'6" x 1'1 1/2" x 6" - 7" (Acc No: IB 29).
