Activities

Field Visit (25 July 2022)

Defence against air attack at Charles Hill was provided by rockets, and two launching pads for these, set some 70m apart, have been identified on the summit of the promontory, close to the E end. One is situated immediately N of the W end of the building that overlies the Monk’s Cave at NT 18569 83716; the other lies 43m W of the searchlight battery NT18SE 27.02 at NT 18592 83784.

Both launch pads comprise a raft of concrete measuring about 4.6m in diameter. However, because of a cover of turf, the ring of bolts at the centre of each (which originally secured the rocket launcher and were referred to in a previous report) were obscured.

Visited by HES Archaeological Survey (J. Sherriff; A. McCaig) 25 July 2022.
