Archaeology Notes

NT17NE 212 centred 1990 7695

A site listed as a 'Starfish' decoy site (Dobinson 2000) has been identified from RAF WWII aerial photographs (NLA/14: 619 to 621, flown 19 June 1941) in an area now occupied by the W end of Marine Drive. The area is of a triangular shape and the aerial photographs show a group of the 'fire-burning' boxes and the electricity generating bunker.

A 'Starfish' decoy was intended to divert bombing attacks from the intended target by giving the illusion of a burning town or city. It is probable that this site is connected with the dummy heavy AA battery situated to the E on Silverknowes golf course (NT27NW 51).

Information from RCAHMS (DE), May 2001.
