Field Visit (29 July 1992)

This coal mine which is situated on the N of the public road to Easter Whin, comprises a partly reduced bing and a railway siding along its N side. It is depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map as a bing with buildings to the NW and labelled 'Barnsmuir Colliery: Pit No. 5' (Stirlingshire 1899, sheet xxxv), but by 1913 it had been abandoned (Stirlingshire 1922, sheet xxxv). The 'Old Tramway', depicted on the 2nd edition map (ibid), leading to an an abandoned working to the SE (NS86NE 51) CSW 4389), has been afforested and could not be located at the date of survey.
