Trial Trench (May 1984)

NS87NE 29 892 795.

Trial excavations here showed that recent land-scaping has buried the former ground surface under approximately of c.19th century date overlay undisturbed top soil containing post-medieval pottery. Similarly, stratigraphy was observed in the southern trial but, in addition, the north bank of the East Burn was located. A layer immediately over the natural bank of the burn contained early post-medieval pottery and a coin of Charles I.

Watching Brief (2006)

NS 892 795 During the watching brief on a pipeline to provide heated water to the high rise flats in Callendar Park during May 2006 a spread of gravel was noted in the sides of the trench. It lay 0.1m above the natural, but 0.4m below the present surface. Its location is consistent with it having been the Military Way behind the Antonine Wall. The trench also cut a large pit, 3.8m long and 1m deep, containing charcoal. A single piece of Roman pottery was retrieved from the spoil.

Archive lodged with Falkirk Museum.

Geoff Bailey, 2006.
