Activities

Field Visit (10 January 1995)

NS85NE 2.04 8866 6000 to 9000 5954

A stretch of the tramway that formerly ran between Shotts Iron Works (NS85NE 2.00) and Brickhouse at Headlesscross passes through the housing estates of Torbothie. To the N of Torbothie Road (between NS 8866 6000 and NS 8873 5988) the line of the tramway is now followed by Charles Street. To the S of Torbothie Road (between NS 8874 5987 and NS 8878 5979) it has been cleared away in the construction of Southfield Avenue. Beyond this again (between NS 8878 5979 and NS 9000 5954) it survives as an embankment which skirts the housing estate and runs ESE for a distance of approximately 1.4km.

The tramway is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire, 1864, sheet xiii), but was dismantled by the survey of the 2nd edition (1899, sheet xiii.NE).

(CSW 6980).

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, IF), 10 January 1995.
