Archaeology Notes

NS66NW 273.01 6289 6649

In this upper reach at the Blackhill Locks a graving yard was constructed in 1841 to replace one which had been removed from the lower reach (NS66NW 273.09) in order to accommodate new duplicated locks.

G Thomson 1945.

It was decided in 1841 that a new graving-dock should be constructed at this location, since the one in the lower reach had been removed.

J Lindsay 1968.

On this upper reach there was a boatyard and a graving dock which were still in existence in the 1950s, the boatyard having been moved to this location in the 1840s from the foot of the locks at the time when these were duplicated.

G Hutton 1993.

The area of the upper terminus is shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1865, sheet vi), on which the graving dock is clearly marked, as well as on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Lanarkshire 1896, sheet viNE).
