Straining Well [NAT]

OS 1:1250 map, 1972.

Mugdock Straining Well: A 'straining well' is a sunken structure with inlet pipes and screens into which water from Mugdock Reservoir passed on its way to Glasgow. The screens removed detritus. This was the first of two straining wells, and is associated with the initial phase of the Glasgow Corporation's Water Works' Katrine project, which came on stream in 1859. It was photographically recorded by RCAHMS in 2001 because a proposed new water treatment plant (required to meet EU regulations, and approved in 2003) would eventually render it redundant. Similar to Craigmaddie Straining Well (NS57NE 61.04)

Information from RCAHMS (MKO), 2001.

This straining well was decommissioned in October 2007. The cast-iron work on this well is of excellent quality and is by Glenfield and Company, Hydraulic Engineers, Kilmarnock.

Information from RCAHMS (MMD), 3 December 2007.

Drawings of the straining well exist entitled 'Glasgow Corporation Water Works, Loch Katrine Aqueduct, Mugdock Reservoir Straining Well and Tunnels in connection therewith, No 3 Mugdock Reservoir contract drawing no.4', signed by Bateman and dated 1857 were viewed courtesy of Scottish Water (Muylle Id=289).

Infomation from Jelle Muylle, engineer carrying out survey of sites and structures of the Glasgow Corporation Loch Katrine Waterworks scheme for RCAHMS, Historic Scotland funded, December 2007/January 2008.
