OS 1:1250 map, 1973.
In 1839-42, the botanic gardens moved from the W end of Sauchiehall Street to a 25-acre (10 ha) site at 703 Great Western Road in the search for purer air, where they became an added lure to the developers of the high-class residential West End estates; they remained a private institution until 1891 and were extended (across the Kelvin) in 1892-3 and again at the Kirklee (W) end in 1900.
E Williamson, A Riches and M Higgs 1990.
A possible dark-age or medieval enclosure was identified in the course of fieldwork by Dr. T.C. Welsh in July 2000.
