Archaeology Notes

NS53SW 3 50958 34140

(NS 5088 3414) Sornhill, a tall, attractive laird's house of the 17th century is an L-planned building of three storeys and a garret, with crow-stepped gables and a square stair-tower rising in the re-entrant angle. A modern porch at the foot of the stair-tower covers the original entrance. The windows, where they have not been enlarged, are small, with simple roll mouldings; some have been built up. Many of the windows have inscribed lintels, now worn and indecipherable; one above the first floor window is dated 16??.

N Tranter 1970

As described. Sornhill is now unoccupied and fast becoming derelict. One stair tower lintel bears the date 1660, and another the initials N M R.

Watching Brief (24 November 2008 - 10 March 2011)

An archaeological watching brief at Sornhill Farm, to the south of Galston was carried in two stages and included excavation for the placement of services around the main house as well as the placement of foundations for a garage. No significant archaeological material was observed during the course of the archaeological works and the only anthropic material observed was that relating to 19th or 20th century use of the site.
