Archaeology Notes

NS52SW 11 c. 542 209

For Dumfries House (NS 5414 2037) and associated buildings, see NS52SW 12.00.

An unfinished axe-hammer, perhaps of granite, and measuring 9 5/8 ins x 4 3/16 ins x 3 3/8 ins was found at NS 542 209 when making ponds at Pennyland. Bulldozers were in use, the exact circumstances and place of find not seen. It was donated to Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum.

R A Milligan 1970

The find occurred within the policies of Dumfries House but no specific details are known (estate office, Dumfries House Mains); it was probably found during gravel extraction, now backfilled, in the general area stated.

Visited by OS (JRL) 18 October 1981

This unfinished axe-hammer is held in Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum under accession number A.705. It has been petrologically attributed to 'near' group XXIX (Essexite from central Ayrshire). A location at NS 56 22 has also been suggested for its discovery.

T H McK Clough and W A Cummins 1988.
