NS 4072 3007. At this spot is a feature not unlike that described on NS43SW 8, though its ditch is missing.
OS 6" map annotated by O G S Crawford, 31 October 1938.
Paterson considers this to be the site of Barnweill Castle, indicated on Blaeu's Atlas (from Pont's survey of about 1600) as 'the old Castle of Barnwyiel'. 'The ground, apparently artificially raised in ridges, is no doubt part of the foundation stones and walls of the old castle, now overgrown with soil. (See also NS43SW 8, which he notes as a law, associated with the castle).
J Paterson 1863
This is an irregularly-shaped enclosure, almost rectangular in plan. It is principally part of the natural hill, and has been quarried on the S and E sides. The whole earthwork has every appearance of being the result of spoil from quarrying. The bank in the W may be part of this spoil or possibly a field bank, one of a number which are visible here, in association with well-defined rig and furrow.

OS (JD) confirmed. An entirely fortuitous work, the result of minor quarrying operations around a natural eminence. (See also NS43SW 13)
Visited by OS (JRL) 22 June 1982
About 40m to the SE of the earthwork at Barnweill (NS43SW 8), and occupying the summit of the hill, there are the remains of banks and other earthwork features, probably no more than the result of quarrying.
Visited by RCAHMS (IMS) April 1985.
A quarry, which is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Ayrshire 1860, sheet xxviii) and annotated 'Old Quarry (Whinstone)', has been recorded on oblique aerial photography (RCAHMSAP 2000).
