(NS 3046 4335) Cross (NR)

OS 6" map (1971)

Kilwinning Cross formerly stood three or four feet nearer the centre of the street, but was moved to its present position about 1835 to make way for traffic. The cross is supposed to be the original one with the exception of a small wooden cross erected on the top (Name Book 1856). The under part to the iron band seems modern; it at least has been cemented over. The main shaft is octagonal in section, its base set in the iron band referred to. The capital consists of carved heads and foliage of the Late Gothic period, and takes the form of the shaft. Upon this rests a weather-worn cross in wood (J W Small 1900).

W G Black 1930

Owing to the bad structural condition of the old cross, it was renovated in July 1956. A new wooden cross was fitted and the old stonework strengthened and cemented over.

Information from J Saxelby, town chamberlain, Kilwinning, 11 September 1956.

Kilwinning Market Cross, standing on the edge of a raised footpath, now has no appearance of antiquity, the whole being cemented over. There is no carved capital as described by Small.

Visited by OS (JLD) 11 September 1956

The cross has recently been completely rebuilt in fine sandstone, with only a token block of the former cross incorporated in the W side of the base.

Visited by OS (JRL) 13 October 1982
