Archaeology Notes

NS27NE 98.00 2834 7623, 2822 7633 to 2847 7615.

(Location cited as NS 283 763). Steamboat Quay, built 1788, rebuilt and extended 1809-18. A stretch of quay, with a wood-piled frontage, facing the river. At the east end is the 2-storey. 3-by-4-bay waiting- and refreshment-room block (now offices) with 4 oriel windows at first-floor level on the seaward side. On the west side is a 17-by-2-bay, iron-framed wooden transit shed, with an ornamental facade, and a two-storey and attic, 4-by-4-bay, iron framed, red-and-white-brick building, with round-headed windows. Dated 1859, this is the earliest dated red-and-white-brick building in Scotland known to the author. Another feature is the cast-iron column supporting a clock and lantern.
