(NS 0055 8519) Cist (NR)

OS 6" map (1900)

Listed as a Clyde-type chambered long cairn by Scott, it is situated on a small knoll on a shelf on the steep E side of the glen. Little of the cairn remains, though it is about 3' deep round the chamber. Its edges are difficult to trace exactly, but it seems to have been round, 32' in diameter. The cist-like chamber lies c. 6' from the NE edge of the cairn; it was left open after Mann's excavation c. 1930. It is made of 4 slabs, and measures internally 2'9" x 2'7 1/2" x 3'10". Beside the chamber lies a slab 6'5" x 4'3" x 10", probably the dis- placed capstone. Over the NE side slab there lies a flat slab 1'7" x 1'8", slightly projecting into the chamber; it might be a corbel stone. A sherd of pottery from the chamber is in Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum (Accession no: A.5954a).

A S Henshall 1972; J G Scott 1969

Generally as described. The tip of a slab 0.3m to the NE of the chamber is possibly a portal stone.

Revised at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (DWR) 23 November 1972

As described in the previous information.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (TRG) 13 October 1976

On the N side of the Auchategan Burn about 700m SSE of Ardachearanbeg, there is a small chambered cairn (Henshall 1972), situated at a height of 145m OD overlooking the valley of the River Ruel, and in position similar to that of the chambered cairn at Lephinkill (NS08SW 4), about 900m to the S. The cairn is about 7.5m in diameter and 0.5m high, the height being accentuated by the small natural knoll on which it stands. The simple two-compartment chamber is entered from the NE. Only one stone of the outer compartment remains, but all four stones forming the main chamber survive. The NE end-slab has spilt vertically, and both it and the SW end-slab are trapezoidal in profile with the side-slabs supported by them and leaning inwards. As shown on the plan (RCAHMS 1988), the chamber measures 1.1m by 0.9m at floor level, but the breadth decreases to about 0.4m at the top, and the depth is about 0.7m. An adjacent displaced capstone measures about 2m by 1.3m and 0.25m in thickness. The chamber was excavated by L M Mann about 1930, and a small-rim sherd of pottery, found in the course of this work, is now in Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum.
