Note (31 March 2019)

Date Fieldwork Started: 31/03/2019

Compiled by: Kilmartin

Location Notes: Kilmartin Community Team: After a thorough search in the area around the Canmore grid reference, a panel was identified at NR 85735 90521, close to the old settlement of Achnabreac. It comprises a stone with two faces perpendicular to one another, adjacent to gap between old buildings. Situated in a very prominent position with views down Lochgilphead and across to Knapdale. The location roughly agrees with 1989 recording within a 100m radius. The markings are natural features

Kilmartin Field School 2019: Achnabreck 4 is situated within dense, mixed forestry approximately 20m S of Achnabreck 3, according to the Canmore record. This previous survey was carried out in 1984 and, since that time, the forestry has become dense and overgrown with fallen trees, bracken, turf and moss covering the surrounding area. We looked for the panel using the grid references and description in the existing Canmore record, but encountered thick forestry, and the non-specific coordinates (accurate to within a 100m radius) meant we were unable to locate the panel. Photographs of our encounter with area are attached. Naddir's description is of a panel with 14 cup marks, relatively large in size. The difference in number and contrast to the peck-like form encountered here, makes it seem likely that the panel identified by the Kilmartin Community Team, shown in the location sketch and panel sketch, is natural.
