(NR 7231 2123) Standing Stone (NR)

OS 6" map, Argyllshire, 2nd ed., (1924)

Standing Stone, Balegreggan: This stone is situated at a height of 55m OD in a cultivated field 595m ESE of Balegreggan farmhouse, overlooking Campbeltown Bay from the N. Now leaning considerably to the N and W, it would stand to a height to 4.0m if errect. It measures 1.4m by 0.5m at the base, with the longer axis aligned roughly E and W, and rises with a slight taper to a rounded top. The S face of the stone bears at least seventeen plain cup-marks, some very faint, the largest being 0.089m in diameter and 0.025m in depth. In addition there are a number of other very shallow hollows, but these are now too heavily weathered to be distinguishable from the numerous natural scars that occur all over the rough surfaces of the stone.

RCAHMS 1971, visited 1960.

NR 7238 2123. As described.

Resurveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (RDL) 7 March 1963.

Said to be a 1st millenium BC lunar observatory by Thom.

A Thom 1971; 1979.
