Old Lowland Church, Campbeltown: This church was built in 1706 on the site of an earlier church known as the 'Thatched House', and continued in use until shortly before the erection of Castlehill Church (NR72SW 15) in 1778-80. An 18th century plan of the town depicts the church as a T-shaped structure fronting Kirk Street, with a central wing at the rear. After standing in a ruinous condition for a number of years the building was restored in 1904 to fit it for its present use as a church hall. This restoration appears to have involved the extension of the original main block a little to the NW and the replacement of the original NE wing by an aisle of somewhat different dimensions. At the same time many of the original openings in the main block were altered and new ones inserted. The building is constructed of local rubble with dressings of red sandstone. The SW wall incorporates a blocked doorway surmounted by a stone panel bearing the date of erection, 1706. Another panel, dated 1904, is incorporated within the masonry blocking of the doorway itself.
