Archaeology Notes

NR62SE 3 c. 66 21

(NR c. 6650 2130). A dug-out canoe was found here when the loch covering this area was drained probably about 1790 (P MacIntosh 1861).

Information from D Colville, 1960.

(NR c. 66 21). In 1790 the drainage of the former Loch Sanish revealed what was probably a logboat; it does not appear to survive. The records of the former Ordnance Survey Archaeology Branch locate the discovery at NR c. 6650 2130, but the evidence for this is unstated.

The location is in South Kintyre, in a flat area at an altitude of about 5m OD on the S side of Machrihanish airfield (NR62SE 28), and is probably based on underlying marine silt.

P MacIntosh 1861; L McInnes 1935; R J C Mowat 1996.
