Archaeology Notes

NR34NW 20 3364 4696

At NR 336 470 is a round house founddation 34ft to 35ft in diameter over a 6ft wide spread wall of earth and gravel, with on the south east an incurved hollow and narrow entrance covered internally by an oblique screen wall.

F Newall 1963.

NR 3364 4696 A hut circle, situated on a low but prominent swelling in an area of peat mire. It measures overall 13m north-south by 12m east-west with turf covered earth and rubble walling up to 4.5m wide and 1.2m high externally. The bank is badly mutilated in the south east quadrant. The interior is slightly dished and raised above the surrounding ground with a maximum internal height of 1.0m. There are several large stones incorporated in the bank at different levels, but neither kerbing or orthostating was detected.

There is no evidence of an associated field system.

Surveyed at 1:10000.

Visited by OS (JRL), 2 June 1978.

Activities

Field Visit (November 1981)

NR 336 469. Situated 140m NE of Cornabus Cottage, on a slight rise in rough grassland, there is a hut-circle measuring 5.4m by 4.8m within what has evidently been a substantial bank about 3m thick and still up to 1m high internally and 1.2m externally. Although a few large stones are visible in the bank, it appears to be composed predominantly of earth and small stones; a gap on the S, 1m wide, may be an original entrance.

On the E side of the hut-circle there is a curious curving feature, now so distorted that its true structure and function are no longer apparent.

RCAHMS 1984, visited November 1981.

Measured Survey (1981)

RCAHMS surveyed the hut-circle at Corr Dhunan at a scale of 1:200. The plan was redrawn in ink and published at a reduced scale (RCAHMS 1984, fig. 133C).
