Archaeology Notes

NR34NE 32 c. 388 460

A Late Bronze Age socketed axe from Achnancarranan (NR 388 460) in the collection of Mrs Ramsay, Kildalton House, 1923, is now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS Accession no. DE 120). It is 4 ins long 2 1/4 ins greatest width.

F Celoria 1960; J M Coles 1962.

(Roseberry Topping variant of Sompting type). Single find. Socketed axe, partly smooth, partly rough or porous, brown, scratch marks and/or signs of sharpening on blade, mouth somewhat damaged. Length 102mm, mouth 24 x 31 mm, cutting edge 58mm, weight 365 gms. NMAS DE 120.
