(NO 8440 9989) Maryculter House (NR)

OS 6" map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1904)

The oldest portion of the mansion house at Maryculter was probably built about 1618, but there seems to be doubt as to whether the house incorporates remains of the 13th century preceptory (of Knights Templars - see NO89NW 8) or that merely materials from the preceptory were used inits construction. The house was repaired or rebuilt after a severe fire in 1720.

J A Henderson 1892; G M Fraser 1922.

Maryculter House, a large commodious mansion is now re-named 'Deeside Hotel'. The walls have been harled but, from the windows and other architectural details, it can be assumed that the eastern 'U-shaped' part of the house is of 17th century date, while the western part of 18th century date. A modern, probably 19th century, wing has been added to the north side of the house.
