Pilot Office and Signal Lighthouse (Red and Green) [NAT]
OS (GIS) AIB, April 2006.
On the E side of the entrance to Arbroath harbour (NO64SW 28.00) is a most attractive lighthouse, with an unusual D-shaped plan and two floors. The main light is displayed from the upper room, the small optic being carried on a cast-iron stand that is a miniature replica of the Bell Rock lighthouse (NO72NE 1), which lies 18km to the S. From one side of the lower room, a green-coloured sector covers the harbouir entrance, and shows when it is unsafe to enter. This little room is comfortably fitted out with a fireplace, the decorative chimney of which dominates the building and adds distinction; its designer is as yet unknown.
