Activities

Archaeological Evaluation (22 March 2021 - 1 April 2021)

John Gooder – ACCESS Archaeological Condition Services Ltd NO 51451 16447 An archaeological test-pit survey was required by St Leonard’s School following an inadvertent breach within scheduled land (the school grounds) associated with St Andrews Cathedral and Priory and adjacent ecclesiastical remains (Designation Ref: SM21332). The work took place from 22 March to 1 April 2021. The objective of the work was to establish the scale of any possible damage to the archaeological recourse. Two archaeological features were unearthed:

NO 51479 16309 (centred) The infill of the mill dam associated with the Abbey Mill (Canmore ID: 34302) was unearthed within a sunken garden currently used as a play area.

NO 51481 16352 A layer of demolition/building collapse was revealed to the immediate E of the Teind’s Yett. Scarring on the precinct wall here shows the former presence an internal structure associated with a Teind’s Yett turret, with the test-pit occupying a location within the footprint of the structure which could be the Teind’s Barn, which historic mapping (OS Town Plan 1895) shows near this site. Various early cartographers also depict a large building at this location.
