Activities

Field Visit (November 1996 - May 1997)

NO30NW 113.09 From 3435 0855 to 3500 0871

Several sections of narrow gauge tramways belonging to at least three phases, can still be traced amongst the spoil heaps throughout the main section of the quarry. The longest extant section runs from NO 3435 0855 to NO 3482 0858, with three breaks in its course, where, either the embankment has been removed or the cutting has been infilled by later operations; elsewhere tramways cut one another, others are overlain by later spoil dumps. None of the tramways are shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Fife and Kinross), 1856 sheet 17, suggesting that all are later than the mid-19th century.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE) November 1996 and May 1997
