Field Visit (November 1996 - May 1997)

NO30NW 113.08 Centred 3482 0866

This portion of the Cults Hill Lime Works lies to the W of the present works and is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Fife & Kinross, 1856, sheet 17 and the current OS 1:2500 map (1963) (for the remainder of the works, see NO30NE 23).

The Cults Hill workings are separated from the Bunzion works to the W by a narrow gap between the spoil heaps of the respective workings and this gap corresponds with the divide between the two works shown on the 1st edition (ibid)

The remains in this section of the quarry consist of a series of spoil heaps together with short sections of narrow gauge tramway, which both cut and are overlain by the spoil. The entrance to a mine is visible at NO 3471 0857. Also, within this area there are the remains of a stone-built limekiln (NO 3483 0866), which has been reduced to a mound of spoil and earth, and from which a tramway embankment arcs northwards. This section has the appearance of a short headshunt. It is connected to the rest of the system by a steeply graded reverse section leading down to a lower level of the quarry. However, due to heavy vegetation it is not possible to see all of the surviving remains, so it is possible that this top section may reflect two phases of the internal quarry tramway system (see NO30NW 113.09). None of the historical OS maps show the tramways in this part of the quarry.
