Activities

Geophysical Survey (4 August 2010 - 16 September 2010)

NO 2890 4600 A magnetic survey carried out at Cardean Roman fort 4 August–16 September 2010 aimed to supplement the excavation data, resistivity surveys (DES 2001) and aerial photography available from the site.

The north and south-eastern defensive ditches were well defined, as was the ditch running SSE which encloses a rather featureless annexe (the two point anomalies within it were due to modern electricity poles). The north-eastern half of the fort was magnetically very noisy. Whilst some of this may represent Roman industry other parts may represent a storage/works area established here during the construction of a nearby railway. This possibly extended to the line of a post-Roman road that traverses the site in a SW–NE direction.

The south-eastern part of the fort contained a series of parallel magnetic features, which look very much like barrack blocks, though it is possible that they represent garden/cultivation features associated with a more recent country house.
