Archaeology Notes

NO22SE 23.01 2526 2295

A sepulchral effigy discovered in Errol Parish Church consists of four of a knight in armour, namely the torso, two adjoining leg fragments and a head cushion. Missing are ankles, feet and arms below the shoulders. The stone used is a cream sandstone. The upper surfaces of the effigy are heavily weathered. The remaining sections measure 132cm in length, 61cm in width and 27cm in height. Stylistically the effigy dates to the early 15th century and probably represents a member of the Hay of Errol family.

Donated to Perth Museum and Art Gallery: accession No: 1990.169.

Information: Mr M D King (PMAG) 1990.

This mutilated effigy of a knight is probably of 15th-century date. It was formerly fixed to the wall of the burial-ground of the old parish church (NO22SE 2), whence it was transferred to the present parish church (NO22SE 23), and subsequently to Perth Museum.

Information from RCAHMS (PC, IMS) 21 June 1989.
