Monks' Well (NR)

OS 25" map, (1914)

(Name: NO 2389 1793) Monk's Well (NR)

OS 6" map, (1938)

This is a natural spring with a stone housing about 3' x 3' x 3'. It is traditionally the well used by the Lindores monks, the water being led by an apparently artificial course called the "Rood-linn-burn" or the Holywell burn to the Abbey. This was covered up about 1850 and its name was almost forgotten by 1876.

A Laing 1876; Information from D C Baird 19 June 1956.

NO 2373 1795. The housing, which covers Monks' Well (name confirmed), is modern.

Visited by OS (R D), 18 May 1970.
