Archaeology Notes

NO12SW 215 c. 119 235

About 1829 the 'remains of a boat' were discovered at a depth of about 10' (3.1m) during the excavation of foundations in Saint John Street which runs parallel to the present bank of the River Tay (and at a distance of 130m from it) between NO 1198 2363 and NO 1197 2346. Although the vessel was not a logboat, its unusual nature makes it worthy of re-publication.

The 'planks and bindings' of the boat were of oak while the former were both 'rabetted upon one another' and 'fastened with copper rivets'. A 'well-formed' rope of heather was attached to the boat, and beneath the vessel there were the remains of willows and aquatic shrubs.

G L Gomme 1886; R J C Mowat 1996.
