Archaeology Notes

NO11NW 41.10 1391 1944

The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire, 1866, sheet xcviii) notes an ice-house to the N of the walled garden (NO11NW 41.05) at Moncrieffe House. It is not noted as an ice-house on the 2nd edition of the map (1902, sheet xcviii.SW), and remains roofed and in use as a firewood-store.

The building is rectangular on plan and set back into the steep natural slope; it measures 9m from E to W by 4.15m transversely overall. There are the remains of a cut-down window at first floor level at the N end of the E gable, and it is evident that the present lectern-type roof, which drops to the S, represents the reduction in height of a once-taller building. Much of the S side of the building has been given over to an opening 4m broad, but access to the interior on the date of visit was prevented by a large pile of logs.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, IF), 9 December 1996.
