Archaeology Notes

NO11NE 79 c. 18 18

For Rhynd, Old Parish Church (NO 1826 1854), see NO11NE 23.

Rhynd church is traditionally said to have stood nearer to the junction of the Rivers Tay and Earn than the present church (NO11NE 23). Some freestones that seem to have been used in building, have been ploughed up in Kirkland field on Easter Rhynd Farm.

OSA 1792.

At the end of the 18th century there was a local tradition that the parish church of Rhynd had formerly stood closer to the confluence of the Tay and the Earn. By then, the ground had already been enclosed and improved, and any knowledge of the supposed site appears to have been lost by the date of the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (1866).

The whole area is now under plough and there is no evidence to indicate where the traditional site may have lain.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 3 December 1996.

OSA 1792.
