(Area: NO 190 164) Supposed site of Culdees' Monastery (NR)

Subsequently Priory of Austin Canons (NR)

OS 25"map, Perthshire, (1901)

The monastery at Abernethy was situated on the north side of the churchyard and part of its walls were still standing c. 1780. Nothing now remains.

A Culdee house here is mentioned in 1189-99. It became an Angustinian priory in 1272-3, a college of secular canons before 1345, and was probably dissolved in 1563 or 1567.

No further information.

Visited by OS (W D J) 4 August 1965.

There are no visible remains of the monastery of the Culdees that stood at Abernethy. It is supposed to have lain on the N side of the churchyard at Abernethy parish church (NO11NE 2.00).

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, IF), 27 November 1996.
