Ninewells

A robbed cairn, 10.0m in diameter, set centrally on a stony platform 14.0m in diameter and 0.3m high. The platform seems too regular for spillage, and is probably an original feature. The cairn is surrounded by an almost complete kerb of contiguous upright stones which are graded, gradually reducing in size towards the W where the three largest are laid on edge, suggesting an affinity with recumbent stone circles. Most of the cairn infill has gone, and a recent howk in the centre has revealed no trace of a cist, but has upcast several broken pieces of white quartz and some chips of similar material. Resurveyed at 1/2500.

This cairn is situated on a slight rise in a forestry plantation and comprises a central cairn (delineated by a kerb) and an enclosing stony bank (measuring some 14m in diameter over all). The central cairn measures 10m in diameter and twenty-five of the kerbstones still survive; several (on the NE) lean sharply outwards. There must originally have been about thirty graded stones, the tallest and largest being on the SW, where one of them bears four cup-markings (measuring up to 40mm in diameter). The entire area of the cairn within the kerb has been robbed down to the level of the shortest of the kerbstones, and there is evidence for further recent disturbance at the centre. The surrounding platform measures about 0.2m in height. It is not clear whether this is an original feature or has been formed of stones discarded when the central cairn was robbed. RCAHMS surveyed the cairn at Ninewells (NO04SE 1) with plane-table and alidade on 20 April 1989 at a scale of 1:125. The resultant plan was redrawn in ink and published at a scale of 1:250 (RCAHMS 1994b, 17(A)).
