(NN 9292 1246) Druidical Temple (NR)

OS 6" map, (1959)

A fine group of stones, two only of which are now standing, on the summit of what has been a well-defined mound, which has been cut through by the road. There are several stones lying on the spot which may or may not be pieces of the original standing stones, but two stones of metamorphic schist are unmistakeably prostrate standing-stones. The northerly one is 7ft by 3ft and from 12 to 18ins thick. A groove 2 - 4ins wide appears to run right round it. The other stone is 6ft by 4ft and 18ins thick. The two stones still standing are of old red sandstone and are on the high bank above the road, just inside the hedge. They are 4ft 10ins high, 2ft 8in broad at the base and 10ins thick, and 5ft 3ins high, 3ft 10ins wide and 13 - 15ins thick.

A F Hutchison 1893.

This feature, the remains of a 'four-poster' is as described by Hutchinson (1893). The profile of the mound is evident in the line of the fence bordering the road and suggests a diameter of c. 23.0m. Within the field the mound is so ploughed down as to be unsurveyable. The two prostate stones lie in the junction of the roads - the northerly one is more than half-covered by coarse turf - the southern stone is competely covered but can be located by probing.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (R D) 28 July 1967.

Scheduled as Easthill, standing stones, Auchterarder.

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 10 May 2000.
