(NN 8953 3060) Ossian's Stone and Grave (NAT)

OS 6" map (1901)

Ossian's Stone is 7 1/2' long and 5' wide. The cist was "full of burnt bones". Both cist and stone are surrounded by a circular dyke 200' in circumference and 3' high, with the Military Road passing through its centre.

T Newte 1791.

A large stone which was moved when the Military Road was made. A cist 2' square was found where the centre of the stone stood (letters from a gent on the north of Scotland, 1732).

Chronicles of Strathearn 1896.

"Pieces of coin" are stated to have been found with the bones in the cist (NSA 1845). These may be fragments of a bronze implement, and the short cist prehistoric.

F R Coles 1911.

There is nothing here but a hugh upright boulder, to which Wade's road has obviously been aimed at from the S. Remains of the road and stone wall beside it are plainly to be seen. There is no evidence of a cairn or of the four stones mentioned.

OS 6" map annotated by O G S Crawford, 27 April 1940.

"Ossian's Stone" is surrounded by the remains of a turf-covered stone wall, rather than a stone circle. The E half is as planned but the W half has obliterated except for two surviving stones. No trace of a cist was found.

Surveyed at 1:10560 scale.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 13 November 1970.

As described in previous field report.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (SFS) 8 October 1975.
