General Wade's Military Road (NAT)

OS 1:10560 map (1969).

NN76SW 17.01 NN 7250 6471 Errochty Water Bridge Cancelled see NN76SW 31.

The military road is overlain by the modern road as it heads N to Trinafour. The military line then turns W of the modern road and crosses the Erochty Water. At this point the old bridge (NN76SW 17.01) at NN 7250 6471 is visible, held up by wooden supports. The road then starts its ascent by the first of a series of zig-zags.

J B Salmond 1938.

NN 7499 6008 - 7260 6455 modern road on course.

NN 7260 6455 - 7250 6471 old metalled, terraced access road on course of military road.

NN 7250 6471 Single arch rubble-built bridge (NN76SW 17.01), 5.7m wide. Probably 18th century.

NN 7250 6471 - 7280 6499 modern road on course.

Visited by OS June 1969.

The road heads NW on a fairly straight stretch, having ascended the hill, and then descends into Trinafour. It heads W of the modern road, passing through a bank of rhododendrons to the church and the old bridge (NN76SW 17.01) at NN 7250 6471. Although there was also a kingshouse at Trinafour, there are no indications as to its location. To the N of the bridge, the road starts its ascent on the first of a series of traverses.

W Taylor 1976.
