Archaeology Notes

NN70SW 3 7247 0188.

(Area NN 726 018) Three cists were found in 1901 in making a deviation road in the Crofts (The Scottish Antiquary 1901) on the north side of the railway at Doune Station. The first two, 30 ins. and 26 ins. long respectively, contained traces of ashes and burnt bones. The third, 4ft. 4ins long, contained ashes, burnt bones and two food vessels.

No further information was found regarding the actual finds. The deviation road mentioned is, according to local information, the road running parallel to the railway from NN 7285 0182 to NN 7241 0188, "The Crofts" being the name applied to the area on the north side of the railway.

The food vessels are in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS Accession no: EE 86 & 87).

These cists were found between the Standing Stone (NN70SW 30) and the Round Wood ie. approx. NN 7247 0188.

Three cists containing cremations were found in 1901; in one of them there were two Food Vessels (NMAS EE 86 and 87).
