Archaeology Notes

(NN 1544 2886) Tigh Mor (NR) (Ruins of)

OS 6" map, Argyll, 2nd ed., (1900)

A residence of the McGregor of Glenstrae, in Stonmilchan, was on the slope of the hill above Tullich.

NSA 1845.

The manor house of Stronemeloquhan is mentioned in 1554 and in the 17th century. Tradition identifies two different sites. (See NN12NE 3 for the other site.)

Orig Paroch Scot 1854.

Tigh Mor, a ruin, is well known in the district as the "large house", once the residence of the Clan McGregor.

Name Book 1870.

Situated on the summit of a slight, heather-covered, knoll are two grass-grown platforms, apparently the foundations of buildings. The most southerly is rectangular in plan, cut into the slight slope on the S and is bounded by a very slight bank, maximum height 0.4m. The other platform is of a less well-defined shape and takes the form of a mound averaging 0.5m in height.

Visited by OS (G H P) 28 April 1962.

No change to previous field report. It is unlikely that a manor house stood at this site. The two sub-rectangular platforms are probably the remains of shielings.

Visited by OS (D W R) 19 March 1973.

The only visible remains are the footings of two sub-rectangular buildings, one of which measures about 15.0m in length and 7.5m in width over all, and the other about 8.0m in length and 5.5m in width over all. There is little exposed stonework and it is possible that both buildings were constructed mainly of turf.

RCAHMS 1975, visited 1967.

One unroofed building and a small unroofed structure are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire 1875, sheet ci), but they are not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1977).

Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 30 July 1998.
